Après le double LP "The Loningisa Years 1956-1961", sorti en 2017, Planet Ilunga continue d'explorer l'œuvre monumentale du groupe le plus légendaire du Congo, l'orchestre O.K. Jazz. Cette nouvelle compilation 'La Rumba de mi Vida' illustre l’immense travail d’exploration de la rumba congolaise accompli par l’OK Jazz et son chef Franco dans les années 1960 et au début des années 1970. Chacune des quatre faces de ce double album présente une facette différente de l’OK Jazz. Les chansons présentées justifient la réputation de Franco, toujours actuelle, de plus grand portraitiste de la société congolaise.

La face A contient des titres publiés au début des années 1970 sous le label de Franco, les Éditions Populaires. C’est à cette époque que Franco prend le contrôle total de l’orchestre et intègre de nouvelles sonorités au groupe, en réhabilitant notamment la guitare acoustique et en tissant des collaborations avec des artistes de la première génération de la rumba congolaise comme Manuel d'Oliveira et Camille Feruzi. La face B comprend certains des premiers enregistrements de l’OK Jazz à l’étranger, réalisés pour le label Surboum African Jazz lors d’un voyage à Bruxelles au début des années 1960. La face C comporte quelques belles reprises de l’OK Jazz, la plupart d’artistes cubains. Enfin, la face D témoigne des aspirations du groupe de composer des chansons enracinées dans le vaste univers du folklore congolais et d’écrire des textes dans d’autres langues que le lingala, lingua franca de Kinshasa.

Presque tous les 23 titres de cette compilation n'ont pas été réédités auparavant et ont été restaurés et remasterisés à partir de la version originale de 45 tours ou 78 tours. Cet album n'aurait pas été possible sans l'aide précieuse de nombreux connaisseurs et collectionneurs de rumba congolaise. Une mention spéciale va à Stefan Werdekker, Hama-Dinga Ya Makilo et Samuel Malonga pour leur aimable assistance durant mes recherches.

After the double LP 'The Loningisa Years 1956-1961', released in 2017, Planet Ilunga continues to explore the monumental oeuvre of Congo's most legendary band O.K. Jazz. This new compilation 'La Rumba de mi Vida' displays the full extent to which O.K. Jazz and its bandleader Franco explored Congolese rumba in the sixties and early seventies. Each of the four sides on this double LP presents a different facet of O.K. Jazz. The songs presented on this album justify why Franco was (and still is) regarded as the greatest portraitist of Congolese society.

Side A presents tracks published in the early seventies on Franco’s label Editions Populaires. This was a period in which Franco took full control over the orchestra and was integrating a new sound into the band such as the return of the acoustic guitar and collaborations with artists from the first generation of Congolese rumba such as Manuel d'Oliveira and Camille Feruzi. Side B includes some of the first recordings O.K. Jazz made abroad, when the band went to Brussels in the early sixties to record for the Surboum African Jazz label. Side C features five charming covers that O.K. Jazz did, mostly of Cuban artists. Side D shows the band’s sensitivity for composing songs firmly rooted in the vast universe of Congolese folklore, and for writing lyrics in languages other than Lingala, Kinshasa’s lingua franca.

Almost all of the 23 titles on this compilation have not been re-released previously and were restored and remastered from the original 45 rpm or 78 rpm release. This release would not have been possible without the precious help from many connaisseurs and collectors of Congolese rumba. A special mention goes to Stefan Werdekker, Hama-Dinga Ya Makilo and Samuel Malonga for their kind assistance during my research.
