Après les albums « The Loningisa Years 1956-1961 » et « La Rumba de mi Vida », sortis respectivement en 2017 et 2020, Planet Ilunga écrit un troisième chapitre en honorant l'œuvre du groupe le plus légendaire du Congo, l’orchestre O.K. Jazz. Cette nouvelle compilation « Pas Un Pas Sans ... Les Boléros d'O.K. Jazz 1957-77 » est une sélection de chansons de ce qui est pour nous l'un des genres musicaux les plus uniques et passionnés au monde : le boléro congolais.

De tous les groupes congolais qui s'aventurent dans le boléro, l'orchestre O.K. Jazz est de loin le roi de ce style musical né à la fin du 19e siècle à Cuba. En près de quarante ans d'existence, l'illustre groupe a sorti des dizaines de boléros, avec de belles compositions, principalement de Franco et Vicky, et parfois, entre autres, de Kwamy, Edo, Simarro et Mujos. La forme lente du boléro a permis à Franco, qui a déclaré dans différentes interviews qu'il aimait toutes les formes de ‘slow music’, d'exprimer ses émotions les plus profondes et de créer son propre style. Avec la voix suave de Vicky et la touche de guitare dramatique de Franco, O.K. Jazz a su capturer la véritable essence du boléro. La passion de Franco pour ce genre musical a certainement contribué à son surnom de «Franco de mi Amor », en particulier parmi ses fans féminines.

Le thème préféré des chansons boléro d’O.K. Jazz était, sans aucun doute, la joie et la douleur de l’amour, mais aussi l’amitié, la vie citadine de Kinshasa, les lamentations, la politique et même la publicité pour une marque de chaussures comme le remarquable « Pas Un Pas Sans Bata ». Cette chanson et l'univers de cette marque particulière, très populaire au Congo dans les années 50 et 60, nous ont inspirés tout au long (six ans) de la réalisation de cet album.

Toutes les chansons, sauf une, ont été restaurées et remastérisées à partir de la version originale en 45 tours ou 78 tours. La sélection présentée ici par ordre chronologique comprend - comme toujours - une bonne partie de chansons, jamais reproduites après leur sortie originale. Cette sortie de Planet Ilunga n'aurait pas eu lieu sans la contribution de nombreux connaisseurs, fans et collectionneurs de rumba congolaise. Mention spéciale à Christian Ongoba et à « Messager » (Mbokamosika.com) pour le solide travail de transcription et de traduction des paroles; Yves Luambo Emongo et Julien Longomba pour soutenir cette initiative; Stefan Werdekker pour son aide dans la sélection et la fourniture des chansons; Revue Noire pour l'utilisation des photos de Jean Depara; et à Zoi Sakka pour les idées, l'amour et le soin apporté dans la création collective de cet album.

After the double LPs 'The Loningisa Years 1956-1961' and 'La Rumba de mi Vida', released in 2017 and 2020, Planet Ilunga writes a third chapter in honoring the oeuvre of Congo's most legendary band O.K. Jazz. This new compilation 'Pas Un Pas Sans... The Boleros of O.K. Jazz 1957-77' is a selection of songs from what is one of the most unique and passionate music genres on earth, the Congolese bolero.

Of all Congolese bands venturing into the bolero, the O.K. Jazz orchestra is by far the king of this musical style which originated in the late 19th century in Cuba. In its nearly forty years of existence, the illustrious band released dozens of boleros, with beautiful compositions, mainly by Franco and Vicky, and occasionally from Kwamy, Edo, Simarro and Mujos among others. The slow form of the bolero allowed Franco, who said in various interviews that he loved all forms of 'slow music', to express his most profound soul stirrings and create a style of his own. With the suave voice of Vicky and the breathtaking and dramatic guitar touch of Franco, O.K. Jazz was able to capture the true essence of the bolero. Franco's passion for the bolero has certainly contributed to his nickname of 'Franco de mi Amor', especially among his female fans.

The favorite theme in the bolero songs of O.K. Jazz was, without doubt, the joy and pain of love, but it also touches on friendship, city life in Kinshasa, laments, politics and even advertising for a shoe brand like the remarkable ‘Pas Un Pas Sans Bata’. This song and the universe of this particular brand, which was very popular in Congo in the fifties and sixties, inspired us throughout the long process (six years) of making this album.

All of the songs, except one, were restored and remastered from the original 45 rpm or 78 rpm release. The selection chronologically presented here consists - as always - for a good part of songs never reproduced after their original release. This Planet Ilunga release would not have happened without the contributions of many connoisseurs, fans and collectors of Congolese rumba. A special mention goes to Christian Ongoba and 'Messager' (Mbokamosika.com) for the solid work in transcribing and translating the lyrics; Yves Luambo Emongo and Julien Longomba for the support; Stefan Werdekker for his help in selecting and providing a lot of songs; Revue Noire for the use of the Jean Depara photos; and Zoi Sakka for the love, ideas and care in putting this album together.
